Hedong (河東, 'East of the River') was a circuit of Tang China,[1] roughly analogous to the modern-day province of Shanxi in the People's Republic of China.[2] One of the most important cities in Hedong was Taiyuan, which was treated as a tertiary capital in the north after the imperial capital of Chang'an and the secondary capital of Luoyang.[3]
During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, it was designated as a fanzhen (藩鎮), a buffer territory, effectively becoming another military command region, with its executive being a jiedushi. By 754, An Lushan had become the jiedushi of Hedong after already having become the jiedushi of Pinglu and Fanyang, all adjacent territories.[4] Holding three military governorships simultaneously led to Lushan becoming a warlord powerful enough to challenge the Tang, which he did in 755 with his declaration of rebellion from the city of Fanyang.[5]
