Hammerhead sharks are a species of shark found in tropical oceans worldwide. Their name is derived from the unusual shape of their head which gives them increased sensory ability to detect prey.
History
In the early 18th century, hammerhead sharks were hunted by various individuals, such as the pirates Edward Kenway and Adéwalé. The bones they collected from the sharks were profitable in this era of the West Indies, and Edward used them as crafting material for his second ammunition pouch and his shark hunter outfit.[1]
Around the same time, Alonzo Batilla also sought out hammerhead sharks. Instead of hunting, he fished for them.[2]
Behind the scenes
In Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, hammerhead sharks can be hunted for "hammerhead shark bones". In reality, sharks do not have mineralized bones, only cartilage and connective tissue. These "hammerhead shark bones" are required materials for crafting two items: the pistol ammo pouch II and the shark hunter outfit. Two are needed for the pouch while one bone and one pelt of bull shark skin is needed for the outfit.
