Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (10 June 1819 – 31 December 1877) was a French realist painter.

In 1866, one of his paintings, L'Origine du monde, was displayed at an exhibtion at the London Modern Art Gallery. Due to the painting's depiction of female genetalia, it was considered tasteless and obscene, and was eventually removed from the exhibition.
