Guru Arjan (1563 – 1606) was the first of the two Gurus martyred in the Sikh faith and the fifth of the ten total Sikh gurus.
Succeeding Guru Ram Das after his death in 1581, Guru Arjan ordered the construction of a sacred temple in the city of Amritsar, which was previously founded by his mentor. The site was also where Guru Nanak, the very first Guru, would go on to meditate.[1]
After the Harmandir Sahib was completed in 1604, Arjan hid the manuscript of his commandments installed in the temple, which consisted of the basis of the Sikh faith.[1]
