Great white sharks are a species of shark that can be found in the coastal waters of every major ocean. Considered the largest predatory fish in the world, they possess nearly 300 serrated teeth arranged in rows.
While great whites are known to attack humans, they tend to do so out of curiosity, rather than hunger; "sample biting" and then releasing their victims.
History
During the 18th century, great whites were hunted by various individuals, including the pirate Edward Kenway and the Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac. Due to their quick movements and powerful attacks, they were considered dangerous targets. After great whites were killed and skinned, the spoils were either sold for profit or used to craft other materials.[1][2]
Great whites also tended to roam underwater shipwreck sites in the Caribbean Sea, hampering diving efforts by pirates, who were attempting to loot the sunken treasure. To evade the underwater predators, Edward hid inside wreckages and dense forests of kelp.[1]
Trivia
- One of the Abstergo challenges in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag required the player to survive ten attacks from great whites while exploring shipwrecks.
- While "great white shark bone" is one of the resources that can be gained from hunting great whites in-game, sharks do not actually possess traditional bones. Rather their skeletons are made of a substance called cartilage, which is lighter and more flexible.
