This article is about the temple of Apollo in Delos. For other uses, see Temple of Apollo.

The Grand Temple of Apollo was the largest of the three temples in antiquity dedicated to the Greek god Apollo, located within the Sanctuary of Apollo on the island of Delos in Greece. Outside of it stood the Colossus of the Naxians, a giant statue of the god.

History

The construction of the temple began when the island became the seat of the Delian League between 475 and 450 BCE.[1] Built on top of the akropolis of the Sanctuary of Apollo, the temple also laid on top of an ancient tomb.[2]

During the Peloponnesian War, the temple was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra, who claimed the valuables within the temple, among them Theo's Royal Scepter.[2]

Trivia

A part of a tomb with a dead end was located below the Temple of Apollo, behind a bronze statue on the South side of the temple. The partial tomb contained urns (no chests), snakes, and skeletons, as well as a pile of apples concealing an engraving. [3]
