Gorgon Slayer was a spear formerly owned by the misthios Zetes the Retired. Sometime during the Peloponnesian War he and several other mercenaries ventured into the Petrified Temple in order to slay the Writhing Dread. Zetes was only able to escape alive by using his trusty spear to keep the monster away.
Sometime afterwards the Spartan misthios Kassandra confronted Zetes and demanded he hand over his spear.[1]
