Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet (c. 1624 – c.  1684) was an English finance official, diplomat, and spymaster. During the English Civil War he served as Oliver Cromwell's Chief of Intelligence.

Biography

In April 1660, after the civil war had ended and the monarchy had regained power, to avoid execution Downing switched sides and pledged his loyalty to King Charles II.[1]

In around 1682, Downing gained ownership of a cul-de-sac of buildings.[2] Naming the street after himself, the residence of the Prime Ministers would eventually be known as 10 Downing Street.[1]
