Galata was one of the four major districts of Constantinople during the Renaissance.

The only part of the city technically in Asia, it resided across the waters of the Golden Horn. The most cosmopolitan district of the city, it was full of varied architecture drawing from Italian, Ottoman, Byzantine, Greek and Asian influences.
