Fort Charles was a Royal Navy military base in Port Royal during the 18th century.
Built circa 1660, it was the only fort in Port Royal to survive the earthquake of 1692, and would later play host to the trials of several infamous pirates, such as Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, Edward Kenway, Jack Rackham and Mary Read. Many of the convicted criminals were executed within the fort.
In 1720, Kenway managed to escape from a gibbet outside of the fort, with the help of the Assassin Mentor Ah Tabai, who had come to rescue Read and Bonny. Wishing to help, Edward snuck into the fort and was able to find the two pirates; however, Mary had become seriously ill after childbirth, and she died before she could escape.
