Alektryon's alleged residence on Naxos Island

Alektryon was a figure in Greek mythology.

By 431 BCE, a location on a small island south of Naxos Island was named after him. Though apparently a fisherman's hut, by the time the Spartan misthios Kassandra reached it, its human inhabitants laid dead, and the site had become a den of chickens, led by a rooster.[1]

Trivia

  • ᾰ̓λεκτρῠών (alektruṓn) is the Greek word meaning 'chicken, rooster'.
  • In Greek mythology, Alektryon was a soldier charged by the god Ares to stand guard while Ares and the goddess Aphrodite had a dalliance. Alektryon however fell asleep, and thus failed to notify the couple of the approaching Helios in time. As a punishment, Ares turned Alektryon into a rooster to henceforth always announce the rising of the sun (Helios).
  • It is possible to run into a mercenary called Alektryon the Rooster in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, who is accompanied by a chicken/rooster.
