The Flintlock Pistol

The Flintlock Pistol was a pistol common in the British colonies in North America throughout the latter half of the 18th century, particularly during the American Revolution.

History

Charles Lee firing a Flintlock Pistol in the air

From at least 1754 to at least 1783, the Flintlock Pistol was widely sold in general stores throughout the Frontier and in cities such as Boston and New York. The Templar Haytham Kenway himself purchased a Flintlock Pistol at a local general store upon arrival in Boston on 8 July 1754 to assume his duties as Grand Master of the Colonial Rite.[1]

Indeed, it served as the preferred sidearm for many Templars of the Colonial Rite, including Haytham's protege, Charles Lee. On 5 March 1770, Charles triggered the Boston Massacre before the Old State House by firing a shot into the air with a Flintlock Pistol and causing a panic in the crowd. Years later in 1782 at Haytham's funeral, he and his henchmen would hold Haytham's son and killer, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton, captive with Flintlock Pistols. Ratonhnhaké:ton himself began his training under Achilles Davenport with a Flintlock Pistol as a basic sidearm.[1]

Trivia

  • The Flintlock Pistol is modeled after the Harper's Ferry Flintlock. Because the Harper's Ferry Flintlock was manufactured at the earliest in 1805, this makes its appearance in Assassin's Creed III anachronistic.
  • The Flintlock Pistol model seen in cutscenes and the general store menu is completely different to the one used by Haytham and Connor during gameplay. However, in the Frontier gameplay trailer, the former higher quality model can be seen in use.
  • In certain pre-release screenshots for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Edward Kenway appears to have pistols of this model equipped, but in game, no such pistol is available.
  • This pistol also appears in several cutscenes in Assassin's Creed: Unity but is unavailable during gameplay.
