Albany is the capital of the state of New York, United States. It was also one of the oldest settlements of the British Colonies, and one of the biggest of the River Valley area.
History
Originally inhabited by Algonquian tribes, like the Mohicans and the Iroquois, the Albany region was claimed by the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson in 1609 and was settled in 1614 as a trading post. The post was named Beverwijck, but was renamed Albany after the British took control of the area in 1664.
