Saint Denis was a legendary Christian martyr and saint.

According to legend, Denis was a beheaded and martyred at Montmartre during the 3rd century. He then walked with his decapitated head under his arm to the village of Catolacus where he collapsed and was buried. The site of his burial would become Saint-Denis. Around 1140, when the abbot Suger discovered an Apple of Eden, he had it encased in a lantern named the Head of Saint Denis.[1]
