An ink painting of a female shika deer, lovingly tending to her young.
In the springtime, mother deer lick their newborn fawns to clean them, preventing predators from smelling and targeting the helpless offspring. This grooming process is remarkably thorough, and the mother deer can remove nearly all scent from her young.
