In the Middle Ages, the Via Recta left through this gate leading to the Tevere (Tiber River) port in Trastevere. It was restored at the beginning of the 15h century and again in 1498 when Pope Alexander VI wanted to give it a more military feel, right before Cesare marched out of the Vatican to attack Romagna and the Villa Auditore.
