Present day North and South Carolina were originally a single English colony, Province of Carolina. They split apart in 1729. The province's sparsely settled seacoast was often pillaged by pirates, including Edward "Blackbeard" Thatch, "Calico" Jack Rackham, Charles Vane and William Kidd.
