An energetic opponent of Julius Caesar's second invasion in 54 BCE, Cassivellaunus was Chieftain of the Catuvellauni, centered in southeastern England.

The man fought several battles to a standstill until Caesar grouped his forces for a siege. Cassivellaunus called upon the chieftains, of, the and neighboring tribes of Kent, who unified to come to his aid—a rare case of coordinated action among the Britons.

Caesar prevailed nonetheless, and a defeated Cassivellaunus gave tribute. Caesar, however, returned to Rome due to the poor harvest there and, despite this victory, never returned to England.
