Altan Khan (1507–1582) was a powerful Mongol General and was a descendant of Kublai Khan. He is famous for establishing ties between Mongolia and Tibetan Buddhist, and for being the first Mongolian to cross the Great Wall of China.

He started harassing Chinese frontiers in 1529, raiding for plunder and livestock, until he went through Beijing, which he besieged and set on fire.
