The Conway Cabal was a supposed conspiracy led by Major General Thomas Conway with the aim to unseat George Washington as the head of the Continental Army and replace him with General Horatio Gates.
Conway served as a General under Washington and maintained frequent correspondence with Gates, mainly about what he perceived as Washington's failings at his job, especially following his losses at Brandywine and at Germantown, . When Washington learned of the correspondence, both Conway and Gates had to go before Congress to clear their names, though in the end, Washington's supporters rallied around him and the episode ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign.[1]
