Cnut (c. 990 – 1035), often known under the epithet the Great, was King of England from 1016 until his death, King of Denmark from 1018 until his death, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1013, his father Sweyn Forkbeard had seated himself as King of the English after dethroning King Æthelred II. Although Æthelred later reclaimed the crown, Cnut took it himself following both Æthelred's and his son Edmund Ironside's deaths. However, with Cnut's own demise and that of his children, the House of Wessex returned to the throne under Æthelred's son, Edward the Confessor.[2]
