The Cloaca Maxima (English: Greatest Sewer) is one of the world's earliest sewage systems, constructed in ancient Rome. Its remains survive to this day and it is partly still in use.

History

The Cloaca Maxima was one of the world's first major sewage systems. Records suggest it was first built as early as 600 B.C.E. under order of King Tarquinius of Rome. Aside from taking sewage away from the city, it is widely accepted that the Cloaca was used to drain the once swampy location of the Roman Forum.[1]

During the Renaissance, the Cloaca Maxima had been taken over by the Followers of Romulus, and turned into one of their lairs.[2]
