Pope Clement VII (26 May 1478 – 25 September 1534), born Giulio di Giuliano de' Medici was Pope from 1523 to his death.
Giulio was born to Fioretta Gorini a month after the death of his father, Giuliano de' Medici, during the Pazzi conspiracy. He was considered legitimate because of a loophole in Canon law allowing marriages to occur privately between two people. This meant that his parents could have agreed to have married without informing anyone about it.[1]
In 1523, Giulio was made Pope Clement VII. During the sack of Rome in 1527, Clement was taken prisoner in the Castel Sant'Angelo. However, he was able to escape disguised as a tradesman.[1] Clement died in 1534, and was alleged to have been poisoned with death cap mushrooms.[2]
In 2012, Clement was included in a mnemonic set in Abstergo Industries' Project Legacy.[2]
