The Canary Islands, also known as the Canaries, are a Spanish autonomous community and archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, 100 kilometres west of Morocco.
History
By the early 18th century, the Canary Islands were a popular stopping point for trans-Atlantic travelers and traders,[1] as well as a popular location for European Jesuits and missionaries due to their churches.[2] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway saw potential profit in the constant flow of travelers and delivered shipments of olive oil,[1] wine,[2] and cocoa to the city.[3]
