In 1776, the captain was contacted by fellow Templar Nicholas Biddle to attack the French Navy ship La Belladonna when it was on its way to discreetly transport a supply of weapons and gunpowder to the Continental Army.[1] This was one of several operations that perplexed the Colonial Assassins Ratonhnhaké:ton and Robert Faulkner because Biddle was himself a captain of the Continental Navy.[2]
Biddle, sailing Randolph, pretended to be La Belladonna's escort before suddenly abandoning her in the open waters to be preyed on by the Royal Navy.
