Brest is a city in western France.
History[edit | edit source]
By the early 18th century, Brest was one of the three major naval headquarters in France, being equipped with two harbors, one for naval and the other for mercantile shipping.[1] The town was also known for its culinary achievements[2] and its outdoor markets,[3] both qualities attracting many people from France and abroad. The pirate Edward Kenway, enticed by the business opportunities, sent his fleet to trade with the merchants there on a number of occasions.[1][2][3]
In 1749, the Assassin ship, the Aquila, was built in Brest by the French Brotherhood at the request of Achilles Davenport.[4]
During the Seven Years' War, the Templar Shay Cormac sent troop-filled ships to the city to help with the British war effort and the Templars' own interests.[5] After their initial gambit paid off, the Templars sent a second wave of troops to consolidate their success.[6]
On 9 September 1944, members of the 2nd Infantry Division of the United States Armed Forces advanced on the city under heavy machine gun fire.[7]
In 2012, a photograph of US forces advancing on Brest was later acquired by the Assassin Clay Kaczmarek and hidden in the Animus for his successor, Desmond Miles to find. Desmond did so in September of that year.[8] The picture contained a hidden hexadecimal cipher that read "Antikythera mechanism, much older than 150 BCE." The picture was hidden with the Glyph puzzle titled "Infinite Knowledge".[7]
