The structure was built atop a section of Nero's ruined Golden Palace, and was poetically intended for use by the commoners. In 537, the Siege of the Goths destroyed most of the Roman aqueducts and the Terme di Traiano were subsequently abandoned due to the loss of their water supply. Another public works project gone terribly wrong, but I'm sure throwing a few Christians to the lions in the Colosseo made up for it!
