Masatoyo's violent tendencies found him both glory and censure as a warrior. This put his rising sword school in rivalry with the philosophies of Kamiizumi Nobutsuna, who berated him for harnessing his killing urge instead of checking it.
Yet when his champion disgraced Nobutsuna to claim his katana, Masatoyo stayed the final stroke. He would rather his rival live on in shame than be granted an honorable death.
