The Barada is the main river in Damascus, flowing from the northern end of the city's poor district to the western end of the rich district, giving the city a distinctive appearance. Moreover, the river creates a huge oasis, called Ghouta, outside of the city walls. This oasis is a main source of the long and prosperous history of Damascus.
