Augustine Washington Sr. (1694 – 1743) was a tobacco planter and the father of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
Biography
In 1715, Augustine inherited about 1,000 acres of land at Bridges Creek, Virginia, from his father, and renamed the property Little Hunting Creek.[1] He also married Jane Butler, with whom he had four children. He had two of them, Lawrence and Augustine, Jr.,[2] enrolled in the Appleby Grammar School in England. There, Lawrence was recruited into the Templar Order.[3]
After the death of Jane, Augustine married Mary Ball in 1731, with whom he had six children.[2] In 1743, Augustine died, and Little Hunting Creek was inherited by Lawrence, who would eventually rename it Mount Vernon.[1]
Legacy
Augustine's oldest son with Mary, George, was forced to assist in providing for the family following the death of his father,[4] and also began looking up to Lawrence as a mentor of sorts.[5]
