Athelnay is a village located in the county of Somerset in western England. During the Anglo-Saxon period, the village was part of the old county of Hamtunscire.
Around 878, King Alfred of Wessex sought refuge at the village during his exile following his defeat by the Vikings.[1] Under his guise of a "Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ", Alfred invited Eivor Varinsdottir to meet him in the village to discuss matters regarding the Order of the Ancients.[2]
