I'm not sure how well known this AC2 trick is, but if you order your mercenaries to attack without being noticed by guards, it is possible to take out dozens of guards with low profile hidden blade kills. While enemies are focused on your mercs, get behind them and execute with the hidden blade. This can be repeated many times over. Even if the guards are able to counter your attack, their attention is often immediately turned back to a mercenary. I used this strategy to take out 20+ guards without taking any damage on the second to last assassination mission in Venice (The target is a brute surrounded by other brutes).
