Æthelstan was an Anglo-Saxon thegn in East Anglia, England.

Biography

In 864, acting as an agent for King Edmund, Æthelstan secretly worked with fellow thegn Leofwine against the ealdorman Lerion after learning of his plans to overthrow the Mercian King Burgred. As a result, Lerion was killed for his treasonous crimes and his daughters were forcibly betrothed as wives of East Anglian thegns. However, when coming for the daughters, they fought back against Æthelstan, cursed him, and drove him away. Two weeks later, the thegn returned to see the women had vandalized the estate and disappeared.[1]

Æthelstan wrote to Leofwine about his experiences at the estate and his further findings, which proved that Lerion was a worshipper of "false gods". Noting that his estate was surrounded by a horrible aroma, he stated that a priest may be needed to cleanse the location.[1]
