Zita was a Spartan noblewoman and the mother of Zopheras who lived during the 5th century BCE.
Biography
During the Peloponnesian War, Zita came into a dispute with her daughter Zopheras at the Temple of Athena Chalkioikos. Zopheras refused to stay at home like other Spartan women and desired to travel and explore the world like her brothers. Displeased with her opinions, Zita sought the aid of the misthios Kassandra, who sought them out on the suggestion of the Pitana magistrate Xanthe.[1]
Seeing Kassandra's strength and reputation as the mighty Eagle-Bearer, Zita requested her to help teach Zopheras how a Spartan woman should behave. Kassandra agreed, but suggested to train Zopheras's physical strength, which Zita relunctantly agreed to.[1]
