Yangzhou (扬州市) is a prefecture-level city in Jiangsu Province, China.[1]

Yangzhou was the hometown of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Jianzhen. While at Yanguang Temple, he enshrined the śarīra there, though over the years grew more and more apprehensive about developments at court. By 754,[2] already a teacher of Risshū Buddhism at Daming Temple,[3] Jianzhen decided to take them away to Japan to prevent them from falling into the Golden Turtles' hands.[2]
