Niccolò Machiavelli introduces Ezio Auditore to a tunnel network that passes underneath Rome, which he can use to quickly travel to several points in the city, and avoid the notice of any guards. The tunnel entrances may be used or travelled to, as long as they have been repaired or renovated by an Architect. Each of the standard entrances to the tunnels look alike, and have the letters SPQR engraved over their gates.

Trivia
- The tunnels are the equivalent of the fast-travel stations in Assassin's Creed II.
- When Ezio makes use of the tunnels, there is a brief cutscene of him opening the latch on the gate and entering, though the player is not able to see or travel through the tunnels themselves.
- Each tunnel that is renovated will generate income (until a maximum of 1,690 florins) which Ezio can then collect from a bank.
- Ezio can make use of a special tunnel to pass directly from the Tiber River into the Tiber Island Headquarters.
- The Vaticano district is the only district in Rome that cannot be accessed by the tunnels.
