Tenryū-ji (天龍寺; English: Flying Dragon Temple)[1] is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. During the Sengoku period, it was situated in the Arashiyama region west of Kyoto.
History[edit | edit source]
Founded in 1339 by Shōgun Ashikaga Takauji and the Buddhist monk Musō Soseki,[2] it was meant to celebrate the recently-passed Emperor Go-Daigo's soul.[1] Musō became the temple's first head priest and established a garden there, arguing that one could attain enlightenment not just by meditating but also by creating beautiful art.[1]
In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke visited the temple and recovered three lost pages scattered across its grounds.[3]
