The temple under construction

The Temple of Zeus was a temple in the southeast corner of Athens at the foot of the Akropolis Sanctuary. It was dedicated to the "Olympian" Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian gods.

The construction of the temple began in around 550 BCE during the reign of the tyrant of Athens, Peisistratos. However, work on the temple was stopped by the emergence of democracy, which saw the end of tyranny in the city-state.[1]

By the time the misthios Kassandra visited the site during the Peloponnesian War, the work was still unfinished.[2]
