Taiyuan (太原) is a city and the capital of the Chinese province of Shanxi. Since its founding, the city has served as a capital or provincial capital of many Chinese dynasties, dating back to the Warring States period. During the Tang period, the city served as its northern capital.
History
In 756, the Hidden One Li E travelled to Taiyuan to request for reinforcements for Yan Gaoqing's army in Changshan, who in danger of being overwhelmed by the rebel army of An Lushan. At the city gates, he was greeted by Yulin general Wang Chengye, who was sent by general Gao Xianzhi to assist. Wang Chengye however, under the secret orders of the Golden Turtless eunuch Bian Lingcheng, sought to undermine the Tang loyalist efforts and refused to recognise Li E's request for aid. Instead, he ordered the soldiers to capture the Hidden One.[1]
