Syracuse was an ancient Greek polis in Magna Graecia, the coastal region of Southern Italy extensively populated by Greek settlers.

History[edit | edit source]

During the 5th century BCE, the blacksmith Kephalos of Syracuse emigrated to Athens from Syracuse on invitation of the statesman Perikles to open a weapons workshop.[1]

After the victory of then-Tyrant of Syracuse Hiero at the Battle of Cumae in 474 BCE, he gave a pair of tripods to the Sanctuary of Delphi. He dedicated these to his brother to recall his brother's victory at the Battle of Himera.[2]
