The construction of the canal began in 1859 was presided over by Khedive Ismail Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt. He had been pressured by the French to finish work on the canal, and was forced to make use of forced labour despite his on stand agsinst it. Following its completion in 1869, a celebration was held at the Khedivial Opera House by Ismail Pasha to commemorate its opening, with Queen Eugénie de Montijo of France as the guest of honor.[2]
