St. Lawrence River is a river in North America, flowing from Lake Ontario to the North Atlantic, passing through the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec and the U.S. state of New York.
History
European exploration of the St. Lawrence gulf began with John Cabot in the 15th century, but the river itself would only be sailed in 1534[1] by Jacques Cartier with help from the local Iroquois.[2] Cartier conducted a thorough exploration of the river in hopes of discovering a way through to China, being convinced he had reached Asia.[3] French colonization of North America was made possible by the work of explorers and fur traders and their settlements limited the westward expansion of the British Empire.[2]
In the early 18th century, as workers congregated in Quebec City to build the Château Frontenac, Welsh pirate Edward Kenway sent some ships from his fleet sailing up the river to trade wine with the merchants there.[4]
British and French interests often clashed in regards to their overseas colonies and the Seven Years' War broke out in 1755.[2] By 1758, the British planned to capture the French fort of Louisbourg and, by doing so, allowing the Royal Navy to sail down the river unhindered.[5] The Siege of Louisbourg proved to be the turning point of the war, weakening the French and eventually leading to the the capture of Montreal and Quebec City.[6]
