Saint Christopher (died c. 251) is venerated by several Christian denominations as a martyr killed in the reign of the 3rd century Roman Emperor Decius.

In the 14th century, the Madonna dell'Orto, erected by the Humiliati, a penitential order, was initially dedicated to him. However, when a "miraculous" statue of the Virgin was found in a nearby orchard, the church was renamed.
