The Aquila (Latin and Italian for 'eagle') is a constellation. Its brightest star is Altair.
History
In Greco-Roman mythologies, the constellation was named for the eagle, the sacred bird of the god Zeus/Jupiter.
During the 5th century BCE, a Spartan woman Myrrine, the daughter of King Leonidas, was born with an arm adorned by a series of birthmarks which formed the constellation Aquila.[1]
In the 13th century, the Mentor of the Levantine Brotherhood of Assassins, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, built a library beneath the fortress of Masyaf in Syria. The door, adorned with multiple constellations, could only be opened by placing the five Masyaf Keys on the constellation of Aquila.[2]
In 1749, the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins constructed a brig named after the constellation as Aquila in Brest. Captained by the Mentor of the Colonial Assassins, Achilles Davenport, the Aquila became the flagship of the Assassin fleet, until the Templars managed to ambush and nearly destroy the ship in 1768. During the American Revolutionary War, the Aquila was captained by the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton.[3]
