"Ristoro. An insatiable beast, making a mockery of his frock. He denies it, but we all know he serves the Borgia. I tolerate his perversions."
Fiora Cavazza as she "services" Ristoro.[src]

Brother Ristoro was a Minim priest, and a member of the Templar Order. Despite his religious vows, he was a frequent visitor of the Rosa in Fiore brothel, and a dangerous man who was not afraid to kill those who questioned his behavior.

He also appears as a playable character in the multiplayer mode of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, under the title of the Priest.

Biography

Serving the Borgia

"I have brought flesh for Brother Ristoro’s appetite. New girls eager for experience. [...] They have a long night ahead. I almost feel guilty leaving them behind."
―Fiora making a delivery to Ristoro.[src]

In exchange for several girls to feed his "appetite," Ristoro provided the Borgia with religious icons, amulets and gear. He also gave coin to pay off contacts, and documents officially sealed by the church, such as letters of absolution or condemnation.[1]

Paying no heed to his vows of purity, Ristoro often visited the Rosa in Fiore, the most popular brothel in Rome. Out of all the courtesans who worked there, he particularly favored Fiora Cavazza, though she was revolted by both him and his "perversions."[1]

Upon being recruited by Cesare Borgia herself, Fiora was again forced to meet with Ristoro. Though she hoped he would not recognize her, Ristoro picked her out from the crowd of girls she had been tasked to deliver to him.[1]

Ristoro stroked Fiora's cheek, saying that she had always been his favorite, but she only kicked him between the legs and threatened him with Cesare's wrath. He whimpered and withdrew, but again tried to touch her as she left, and was only distracted by the other girls that had been sent to him.[1]

Death

"Ristoro is far from humble! He has broken his vow of poverty! Soiled every promise of purity! He must be held accountable!"
―A brother of Ristoro.[src]

Ristoro's actions did not go unnoticed by his brothers, and at one point, two of his students questioned him about them. In response, Ristoro poisoned them both, though he was able to buy his absolution from the crime, with the help of the Borgia.[2]

A third brother began to speak out against him as well, announcing his misdeeds to a crowd by the Colosseo. As he did so, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze heard and approached, asking him of Ristoro's acts. Upon hearing the full account, he decided to seek the priest out.[2]

Ezio located him at his church, surrounded by Borgia guards. However, these he overcame easily, and he assassinated Ristoro from above with his hidden blade.[2]

Dialogue of Ristoro's demise

A monk speaks publicly to a crowd, alongside two coffins.

  • Monk: Give, and it shall be given to you. For whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return. These are insightful words... words to live by. Yet Brother Ristoro spits at them! Deus omnia videt. (God sees all.)
We Minims require your donations to survive. In return, we offer you knowledge. A fair trade, but one of us takes advantage! He abuses the trust we have worked so hard to establish! Come and see where your donations have gone! Two of our order slain by their own teacher! Ristoro's innocence bought from the Borgia!
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Ristoro is far from humble! He has broken his vow of poverty! Soiled every promise of purity! He must be held accountable! Deus omnes vel absolvit vel judicat! (God forgives all or judges all!)

Ezio approaches him.

  • Ezio: How were these men killed?
  • Monk: They questioned Brother Ristoro's habits, and now here they are, poisoned.
  • Ezio: You question him as well. Why don't you fear his wrath?
  • Monk: A man with nothing fears nothing. I have remained true to my vows. I put my fate in the hands of the Divine. Deus auscultat. (God listens.)
  • Ezio: Your vows keep you from acting, so you seek another to do what you will not.
  • Monk: Please understand. I cannot kill.
  • Ezio: But I can. Where is Ristoro?
  • Monk: He will be at the church, but guards always accompany him.
  • Ezio: The Borgia cannot protect him from me.

Ezio seeks out Ristoro and assassinates him from above.

  • Ezio: Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)

Trivia

  • "Ristoro" is Italian for "restoration" or "renovation," possibly in reference to the Templar's mission.
  • In story mode, Ristoro wields a spear, as opposed to the Holy Dagger he uses in multiplayer.
