Raoul is the first assassin to greet Altair when he returns to Masyaf from after the failed mission to get the "Templar Treasure". Altair greets him by name. He is clearly friendly toward Altair, as opposed to a similar looking assassin who stops Altair at the fortress gate and taunts him about being anxious to go and "put his tongue" to Al Mualim's boots. This other assassin is not addressed by name - an indication that Altair has no use for him.
History
Raoul tells Altair what is going on down in the village when Al Mualim sends him out to distract the Templars. He stops Altair as he is leaving the fortress.
Raoul makes a third appearance in the first memory segment, telling Altair to come up to the tower. Altair, Raoul and another assassin who is unnamed perform the Leap of Faith for the benefit of the Templars at Al Mualim's request. The unnamed assassin breaks his leg in the fall. Raoul tells Altair to go and spring the trap they've set for their unwanted guests while he is setting the injured assassin's leg.
Name
The name "Raoul" may seem out of place in a Middle Eastern setting, as it is a Spanish name. It would not be unusual for an assassin to be from Spain, as Spain was under Moorish/Moslem rule for approximately eight hundred years (711 AD to 1492 AD), beginning with the Umayyad conquest of al-Andalus .
