A pentaconter, alternatively penteconter, was a small sea-faring vessel and a type of galley used by the Greeks of antiquity. Due to their size, they were fast and thus hard to ram.
During the Peloponnesian War pentaconters were used by Athenians, Spartans, as well as pirates.[1]
Etymology
- πεντηκόντορος (pentekontoros) is Greek for 'fifty-oared'.
