Payen was a doctor and a high-ranking member of the French Rite of the Templar Order. During the French Revolution, Payen worked in Les Invalides as the overseer of the medical procedures in the Parisian hospital.

However, thanks to Dr. Claude Chemin, the Assassins discovered Payen's hidden allegiance and after having killed all his guards, assassinated him.
