Biography
In 1998, Hannah Mueller - an Assassin from Paul's camp - returned with a man named Daniel Cross, whom she discovered during while going out and presumed to be an Assassin like herself. Assuming Daniel was part of their camp, the Assassins tried to figure out which cabin belonged to him, with no success. After further investigation, the Assassins concluded that Daniel was not part of any Assassin camp, and the following morning Daniel was led by Hannah to meet Paul.[1]
Paul confronted Daniel in the middle of the camp while having his lunch, though Daniel, confused about the situation he was in, could not provide him with his wanted answers. Paul asked Daniel to show them his arm, which had an tattoo of the Assassin insignia on it - though Daniel was not aware of this, saying it only "looked cool" and "felt right". Showing Daniel his ring with the Assassin insignia, Paul asked him once again about his identity, at which point Daniel experienced a "vision" from the past.[1]
Hearing Daniel speak in Russian and mentioning Tunguska, Paul asked him about the visions he was having, knowing that he was somehow connected to the Assassin Order. Daniel chose not to cooperate, and stormed off to leave the camp. As two Assassins tried to stop him, Daniel attacked the both of them and managed to knock both of them out. He was stopped by Paul, who placed his hidden blade to Daniel's throat.[1]
Paul proceeded to contact William Miles,[1] a fellow Assassin in charge of an Assassin compound located in the Black Hills of South Dakota.[2] Requesting information about Tunguska, William managed to find out that a team of Assassins was sent there in 1908 to retrieve the Staff of Eden, but only one of them walked away; Nikolai Orelov, Daniel's great-grandfather. Finding out that both Daniel and Hannah were gone from the camp, Paul tracked them down to Daniel's apartment. Though angry at Hannah for defying his authority, his attention quickly turned to Daniel. Upon mentioning the name of his great-grandfather, Daniel experienced yet another vision. Simultaneously, Daniel temporarily lost his sanity and ran away from Hannah and Paul, making his way to the rooftop of his apartment via the fire escape. Daniel eventually collapsed to the ground, and revealed that he knew his purpose - to find the Mentor of the Assassin Order.[1]

Daniel, accompanied by Hannah, left the camp, to embark on a journey to find guidance and support of the other Assassins around the globe to find the Mentor, while training both his body and mind. Eventually, his wish was granted by the Mentor, who had been watching his progress, and Daniel was taken to the Mentor's Dubai residence. There, upon receiving the Mentor's hidden blade, Daniel acted on an impulse implanted into his brain by Abstergo Industries during his youth - to assassinate the Mentor, revealing himself to be a Templar sleeper agent. With the Mentor death, Daniel fled to Abstergo's Philadelphia facility, and gave them the location of all Assassin camps he visited. At the same time, Paul had received news of their leader's death, and ordered the Assassins to evacuate the Philadelphia camp immediately.[3]
