A set of patens from Saint-Denis

A paten is a small plate used to hold the sacramental bread of Eucharist. They are usually made of a precious metal.

History

During the French Revolution in 1794, the monk Dom Poirier listed in his journal a set of three patens in the town of Saint-Denis. During his search for the Isu Temple beneath Saint-Denis, Arno Dorian acquired Poirier's journal and learned about the patens, which he believed to be connected to the temple due to having seen a painting of them while exploring the city's catacombs.[1]

Arno subsequently located and retrieved two of the patens while his ally, the young boy Léon, found the third. As the pair tried to figure out how the patens functioned, Madame Margot came to check on them while carrying a candle. When one of the patens was exposed to the candle's light, Arno saw an image on it and subsequently used the candle to discover the hidden images on the other patens. Once put together, the images created a map leading to the Temple's entrance, which Arno promptly left to find.[2]
